guncharlie is perhaps best known for the track เผื่อวันไหนเธอจะกลับมา, a heartfelt ballad that has racked up millions of views and streams.
Now, the 22-year-old returns with new music – ถ้าคิดถึงเธอขึ้นมา – and says he is ready to work on his first album.
He first captured the hearts (and eyes) of audiences in 2019 (when he was 16), when he participated in the reality show The Rapper 2 under a different stage name, charlie.g.
In 2022, he made his debut under Kicks Records – the label founded by the musical duo Lipta as a singer-songwriter.
ChaPop speaks with guncharlie about his time on the rap reality show, and where his musical journey will take him to next.
You just released a new single ถ้าคิดถึงเธอขึ้นมา – could you talk about the inspiration for that?
From my previous single เผื่อวันไหนเธอจะกลับมา, there were a lot of my listeners who want to send this song to their previous lover but they couldn’t. So, I wrote ถ้าคิดถึงเธอขึ้นมา for those people. This song is talking about the question ‘If miss you, can I still text you?”
Your previous single เผื่อวันไหนเธอจะกลับมา has been very popular, with Youtube views crossing 21 million . How do you feel about that, and would you consider it a breakthrough success?
The success of เผื่อวันไหนเธอจะกลับมา is literally beyond my expectation. It helped me to remind myself again to keep on believe in myself, my story and my music.
How was the song creation process for เผื่อวันไหนเธอจะกลับมา like?
I picked the story from my friend who was already in relationship with someone but he still misses his old love as always, and he said to me that he will always has a place for her in his heart. I took this concept and wrote a song for him. These two songs (เผื่อวันไหนเธอจะกลับมา, ถ้าคิดถึงเธอขึ้นมา) have the same arranger, who is Tube YEW (the singer of YEW).
How did you get into music – who are your inspirations?
I love listening to various genre of music since I was a kid because my dad is kind of a CD collector so I grew up with music everyday. I don’t really have a specific inspiration, I only know that I love to write a song.
How did you come with the name guncharlie?
The name guncharlie actually comes from the word กัญชลี which is the slang that means ‘weed’.
You were a contestant on the show The Rapper 2 – how was the experience like for you, and what were some memorable moments from the show?
The Rapper 2 really taught me many things. The most important thing I got from The Rapper 2 is that it changed me from a very introvert kid to have some kind of rockstar mindset so I can survive in the competition.
What’s next for guncharlie?
I am trying to build my own universe of songs and I think now I want to start working on my first album.
