Tilly Birds has released Retro-39, their long-awaited follow-up English-language single.

Retro-39 is, as its name suggests, a retro-flavoured synth-pop track with a catchy chorus (Put it on Retro-39).

Tilly Birds said they had wanted a fresher and lighter sound with the new single, creating a sense of nostalgia for the early 21st century.

The GeneLab band is heavily involved in the song’s production: vocalist Third wrote the lyrics, guitarist Billy is producer, while drummer Milo arranged the track. Third is also involved in the production of the MV.

The trio teased a comeback single as early as 19 September, with the single’s name confirmed on 23 September. A series of teasers also gave fans a hint of the retro themes to come, with cassette players featuring heavily.

Retro-39 is the band’s second English-language single after White Pills, which it released in April and has become a staple in their international setlists.
