GDH tearjerker How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, which stars singer ‘Billkin’ Putthipong, is headed for Oscars.

GDH on 3 October says the movie has been selected as Thailand’s submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards, which will be held on 3 March 2025.

The production house says the film “has become a cultural phenomenon” since its release in Thailand in April and internationally a month later.

“The emotional impact of the story has resonated with audiences worldwide. Many have been amazed at how a film set in a country they might never visit, in a language they don’t understand, can feel so personal and relatable,” adds GDH.

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, which has smashed box office records in Thailand, picked up an award at the 2024 New York Asian Film Festival.

The movie is not the first to be submitted as Thailand’s entry into the Oscars – the country has made some 30 submissions since 1984. However, none of its submissions have made the final nominee list.

The news comes on the same day that Billkin picked up the Rising Star Award at the Marie Claire Asia Star Awards for his leading role in the movie. The awards was held in conjuction with the Busan International Film Festival.

Billkin plays the role of M, a third-generation Chinese-Thai who takes care of his cancer-stricken grandmother not out of love, but with the intention of gaining her inheritance. Along the way, the duo grow closer and M learns that family means more than money.
