When record label Gene Lab announced its GeneLabCon, it outlined plans to make the event more than a music event, drawing its inspiration from the famed Comic Con.

As the event wrapped up over the weekend of 5 and 6 October, it lived up to its moniker of being “not just a concert”.

From conference sessions to gaming competitions, Gene Lab also proved that its slate of artistes and bands were more than musical talent.

The two-day event kicked off with a series of panel discussions, which saw Gene Lab artistes and executives in the hot seat discussing topics that were close to heart.

For example, Tilly Birds guitarist Billy and Three Man Down drummer Thay joined label head honcho Ohm Panthapol (who fronts the band Cocktail) to discuss the issue of music copyright.

There was also fun and games that showcased the artistes’ sporting streak, from basketball to futsal. The artistes also took part in e-sports, with one match featuring Three Man Down memebers intent in gameplay.

There was also the classic rock-paper-scissors game, which saw Tilly Birds drummer Milo emerge as the ultimate champ. (According to Tilly Birds frontman Third, Milo’s only strategy was to keep showing scissors).

Gene Lab also awarded two lucky fans with golden tickets, for correctly guessing the winners of the games. The golden ticket entitles the fan to watch any Gene Lab concert for free for life.

And speaking of concerts, the most-anticipated part of the night would be all of the Gene Lab acts, from known names like Tilly Birds, Cocktail and Three Man Down, to the label’s newest artiste – folk rock singer Kong Huayrai.

Gene Lab says: “A new experience that is different but full; another memory that will be stuck in the hearts of GeneLab lovers for a long time.”
