Thailand hit a significant milestone on 23 January as a marriage equality law comes into effect, allowing same-sex marriages to take place for the first time in the country’s history.

As same-sex couples registered their marriages, T-Pop stars, such as Jeff Satur, cheered the move, calling it an “amazing” day for the country.

Jeff Satur, who has been vocal in his support for marriage equality, gave his congratulations on the milestone.

Jeff starred in the box office smash The Paradise of Thorns, where the issue of marriage equality featured prominently.

DICE member Apo, who also spoke up about the issue in the past, said: “Love today is most beautiful.”

Solo artistes like Silvy Pavida, as well as groups like LYKN and PERSES reshared news posts about the law coming into effect. Music labels – from DMD Music to Riser Music – also came out to hail the occasion.

In March 2024, Thai lawmakers passed the marriage equality bill, with the Thai Senate approving the bill in June. The law makes Thailand the first Southeast Asian country to legalise same sex marriage.

In the first day alone, more than 1,800 same-sex couples across the country registered their marriage, with more than a third from Bangkok. Among them were actor Porsch Apiwat and his partner, the Youtuber Arm Sappanyoo.
