Violette Wautier has taken to social media to defend her performance at the opening ceremony of the 33rd SEA Games, calling out organisers for miscommunication.

Hours after the ceremony ended, Violette, who is featured the games’ soundtrack 1%, clarified the circumstances surrounding her performance.

Viewers of the live broadcast noted “irregularities” in the performance of 1% at the 9 December ceremony, which Violette said was “incredibly off-key”.

Explaining the situation, the Universal Music Thailand soloist says she – along with fellow performers Twopee and F.HERO – were briefed before the performance that they would be required to lip-sync because of “various technical reasons”.

Because of the lip-sync, Violette disclosed that performers’ in-ear monitors were switched off, which made them unable to hear their own singing.

“What happened (that I did not know of)…was a miscommunication occured, because my mic (was live) and my live vocals were broadcast,” she wrote.

“Honestly I feel like my reputation, image, dignity, career and dreams have been destroyed,” Violette adds.

She also confirms that she “rarely lip-syncs” in her performances – unless absolutely required to for technical reasons.

“At the very least, if we were given the chance to sing live – even if it came out bad – we’d feel better because it’s our talent.

“We didn’t even have the chance to do that,” says Violette.

In a separate statement, F.HERO, who produced the track and also performed on stage, confirms the circumstances shared by Violette.

Universal Music Thailand adds that it conducted an internal review following the performance and found that the issue “stemmed from a technical coordination discrepency among the parties involved”.

It also pointed out that the final performance was different from “what had been initially agreed upon”.

Thailand is hosting this year’s SEA Games, which officially kicks off on 9 December.
