A year can make a big difference – and for singer-songwriter guncharlie, the statement definitely holds true.
During our first interview in 2024, the Kicks Records soloist had said he was ready to work on his first album, having built a “universe of songs”.
This year, guncharlie’s stardom continues to rise: not only has the first album – Like You Never Left – been successfully released, he would hold the first concert, which saw tickets quickly snapped up.
Like You Never Left – guncharlie first full album concert took place on 16 August at Bangkok’s Lido Livehouse, marking a turning point in the 23-year-old’s musical career.
As he puts it: “It fulfilled my dreams (as a child) to hold my own concert.”
And just a week later, guncharlie would make his maiden appearance at Summer Sonic Bangkok – both as performer and audience member. ChaPop catches up with guncharlie to chat about his recent string of successes.
How does it feel to be performing at Summer Sonic Bangkok?
Wow, I feel so grateful…and you know, it’s a very…big international music festival that, due to my work schedule for the past few years, I never had a chance to come to. So this is my first time as an artiste and also as an audience and there are so many artists that I want to see today, and the festival is so big and very impressive.
Who do you want to watch at the festival?
Today, I want to watch Babymetal!
Let’s talk about your first concert. How was it?
Wow, it was pretty good because…the picture I saw that day, it was a picture (that I saw) when I was a kid. (I wanted) to grow up to be an artist and to have my own concert, so it fulfilled my dream a lot. It made me want to try harder and become a more well-known artist…and maybe one day I can meet my fans again – on a bigger stage.
Can you talk about your album – Like You Never Left – and how came to create it?
Well, this album started from the song เผื่อวันไหนเธอจะกลับมา. It’s a song about (not being able to) move on from your past love and (having) one place in your heart waiting for her to come back. So the whole idea of the album is about not moving on from the past love.
Like You Never Left is like explaining…that now she’s gone away from you but in your heart, there’s still some feeling of loneliness, some feeling of sadness that you feel. It’s like…even though she is so far away from you…you feel like she’s still with you in some sort of emotion.
Do you have a favorite track from the album?
Yes, my favorite song from this album is 7 นาทีสุดท้าย (Seven Final Minutes). In English, it refers to the seven-minute theory, which…claims that after you die, your brain will provide you the memories that you gather from your past life – like the important memories – after you die for seven minutes.
So (the track) is like the love letter that says…in this whole life that I live, you are the most important memories in my life.
How do you feel about all your recent successes?
Well, I feel great, but…I don’t have time to celebrate that much (laughs), because after I’ve done the concert and the first album, I (am starting to) do the second album now. So, yeah, there’s no time to break.
But, you know, I feel great to have my first album, and for the second album, I want to do it bigger, better and like, deeper in some way. Maybe this year the first song will be released so let’s wait!
