Several Gene Lab bands have responded to the shock resignation of label boss Ohm Puntapol, some going as far as to cut ties with the GMM Music unit.
The ongoing fallout takes place hours after Ohm (the frontman of the now-disbanded Cocktail) posted his resignation statement on Facebook.
In it, he alludes to differences in “goals and perspectives” but stops short of saying that there were conflicts with parent GMM Music.
A flurry of responses from Gene Lab bands and their members came soon after. Many appeared to have been aware of developments before they were made public.
One of those who spoke out was Three Man Down frontman Krit, who paid tribute to Ohm in a Facebook post, calling him a “leader, not a boss”.
His post also suggests that the band could follow in Ohm’s footsteps, with the cryptic line: “We should find our own place to live instead.”
Bandmate Thay concurred in a separate post, saying: “Wherever you go, I will go”. The line is an allusion to Ohm’s departure from the label.
TaitosmitH’s Jai Itkron called on GMM Music to “explain “give a proper explanation” about what had happened, adding that the band was already aware of developments.
He adds that while the band was happy for Ohm’s decision, “we cannot accept this”.
The mixed-gender band Asia7 later revealed they did not renew their contract with Gene Lab when it expired in late-February.
Tilly Birds, in another statement, thanked Ohm for his leadership. The band adds that while they were aware of the situation “for quite some time, we are still impacted by what has happened”.
“Currently, we are still signed to a label, but without the original team to continue our journey with. This means there are many things to consider and decide on going forward,” the band adds.
“From now on, we will choose the best path for our work, because that is what matters most to us, and it is our highest duty to our listeners,” says Tilly Birds.
On social media, fans rallied behind the different bands, adding that they would continue to support them regardless of their labels.
