The ongoing saga involving Thailand’s prominent Bhirombhakdi family has caught the attention of many, including the latest allegations of family sexual abuse.

The controversy has also sparked backlash against several Thai artistes, with fans calling them out about their social media engagement on the issue.

On 13 May, artistes like GMMTV’s Tay Tawan, rapper MILLI, DomundiTV’s Zee Pruk, as well as 4EVE member Punch issued formal apologies to clarify their stance on the sensitive topic.

At the heart of the controversy are sexual abuse allegations brought about by marine conservationist Psi Siranudh Scott against his elder brother Pi Sunit Scott.

Psi and Pi are fourth-generation members of the Bhirombhakdi family, which is linked to the Singha Corporation.

On 9 May, Psi posted an emotional video on his social media pages, detailing his past trauma. The 29-year-old alleges that he had been sexually abused by his elder brother – Pi Sunit Scott – on several occasions as a child. He added that family members were aware of the abuse but did nothing to help.

The claims, which also included allegations of abuse from their caregiver, as well as a lawsuit by Psi’s mother Chiranuj Bhirombhakdi over inheritance assets, sent shockwaves across social media over the weekend.

On 12 May, Pi – the elder brother – responded with a video uploaded on his wife’s social media pages. Pi is married to the popular actress Mild Lapassalan, who starred in series such as GMMTV’s 3 Will Be Free.

In his response, Pi denies the allegations, adding that he had never intended to do anything of that nature to his younger brother. The video post draw likes from many Thai celebrities, with some chiming in support for Mild in the comments.

According to fans, the now-deleted comments and likes came from artistes like GMMTV’s Tay, Off Jumpol and Pod Suphakon, MILLI, actor Mario Maurer, as well as actresses Goy Acharaporn and Ploy Chermarn.

On 13 May, Psi released an audio clip of a conversation between him and his brother recorded three years ago, as evidence of Pi’s alleged confession. The clip – which describes the sexual acts that took place “many times over the years” – sparked a wider fallout on social media.

Psi’s clip drew a flurry of supportive messages from netizens, who rallied behind him. It also sparked anger online at celebrities who liked Mild’s post from the previous day, with many netizens saying this was implicitly supporting sexual assault.

The anger was stoked further when MILLI – responding to online criticism – posted on X: “Sorry my bad”. Many felt the now-deleted post was insensitive, and making light of sexual assault.

MILLI’s agency Yupp! Entertainment later apologised for what it called an “oversight” that stemmed from a “lack of careful and proper consideration regarding the context and sensitivity of the social issue”.

“Following the incident, the company immediately discussed the matter with (MILLI), issued a stern warning and emphasised the necessity of exercising greater caution in her public expression and social media usage,” the agency adds.

Other artistes also clarified their positions amid the backlash. Domundi’s Zee, writing on X, says he “had absolutely no intention of supporting any inappropriate actions or violence” in liking Mild’s post.

He adds that given the “sensitive nature” of the issue, he feels it was inappropriate to pass judgement on who is in the right or wrong.

GMMTV’s Tay, meanwhile, says he liked Mild’s post to “show support for a friend who was being unfairly criticised…with crude, excessive, and untrue words”.
