The Thai government has announced a new project – called ‘Thai Music Wave’ – to put Thai music on the global stage.
The project is a collaboration between the Thailand Creative Culture Agency (THACCA), as well as the Creative Economy Agency.
The movement hopes to “create opportunities” for Thai music artistes on the international stage. Its aim, among other things, is to “create a spotlight for Thai music at international music festivals”.
The move comes as Thailand aims to export its ‘soft power’ to the world, and as T-Pop’s international popularity begins to grow.
In recent years, T-Pop acts have been gaining international exposure. Bands like Tilly Birds and Three Man Down have graced the stages of festivals and showcases in Australia and across Asia.
In 2022, rap sensation Milli became the first Thai solo artist to perform at the Coachella music festival.
T-Pop like Billkin, PP Krit, Bowkylion, PiXXiE, as well as XOXO Entertainment’s 4EVE and ATLAS, have also made their international debuts in the past year or so, touring countries like China and Singapore.
At the same time, there has been a push for more collaboration between Thai and other Asian artistes. Rapper F.Hero, for example, has worked with Japanese performing artistes like Babymetal and Exile Tribe’s Psychic Fever.
