Palmy’s highly-anticipated มิตร Universe Concert is finally here, with sold-out shows to run on 7, 8 and 11 September. The comeback concert sold out within hours of tickets going on sale – even as Palmy added a third show.
Get in the mood for the upcoming concert with ChaPop’s list of iconic Palmy hits through the years.
Back to where it all began
Palmy burst into the scene in 2001 – at the age of 20 – releasing her first eponymous album that contained the catchy debut track อยากร้องดังดัง.
Sharp-eyed music fans will notice a pretty star-studded band that accompanies Palmy in the MV, comprising members from Bodyslam and Potato. อยากร้องดังดัง would later be covered several times, most recently by Riser Music’s Fourth Nattawat in the BL series My School President.
Another notable track on the album is แปดโมงเช้าวันอังคาร, a melancholic track about heartbreak, featuring a pared-back guitar-centric melody.
Palmy would still retain most of this Alanis Morisette-resque sound in her second album Stay. The title track would also be the OST to the 2019 show Sleepless Society: Bedtime Wishes.
Palmy takes ‘A Beautiful Ride’ towards rock
In her third album A Beautiful Ride, Palmy takes a gradual shift away from the unplugged sound of her previous works, to a more rock-centric sound.
The 2006 album also scored her several hits that have become the ‘trademark’ Palmy tune, including the infectious Tick-Tock (whose music video was a gender-bending, cross-genre work of art) and upbeat Ooh!.
The album also contains the heartache anthem ความเจ็บปวด, which has also been covered on several occasions.
ร้องไห้ง่ายง่ายกับเรื่องเดิมเดิม is also another hauntingly bittersweet track about wanting to move on, yet ‘crying over the same old things’.
High ‘Five’
Palmy in 2011 released Five, her fifth studio album, which contains the familiar hit คิดมาก.
Movie buffs will also recognise the track as the OST to the 2019 movie Friendzone. In fact, the MV for the OST features artistes from eight other countries (including the Philippines, China and Indonesia) singing parts of the song in their native languages, before Palmy joins them singing in Thai.
Another popular track from the album is นาฬิกาเรือนเก่า, about holding out for lost love.
This period would also mark the period where Palmy enters her headdress era, where she would sport her trademark fedora hat on several occasions.
A new look, a new sound and then – critical success
5 would be the last studio album Palmy would produce, as she shifted her focus on releasing singles and EPs instead.
After a brief hiatus, she returned in 2017 with a kookier style and sound. The music video to นวด – a tribute to massages – is a riot of colours, and Palmy sports various tribal-inspired headpieces.
In 2018, her single แม่เกี่ยว caught the attention of fans with its distinctly folk sound, thanks to the khaen instrument. Palmy says the song is a tribute to the work of farmers in Thailand’s north-east region. She adds that farming and making music had several similarities – making music being the process of sowing and planting seeds, for example.
It would also be this period where Palmy would grow her popularity further, releasing a string of hits that achieved critical (and chart) success.
In 2018, the follow-on single ซ่อนกลิ่น would go on to arguably be one of Palmy’s iconic tracks in the late-2010s, with the music video notching well over 198 million views – her most-viewed MV ever.
What stands out are the poetic lyrics, depicting the strong feelings towards an ex-lover with the metaphor of the tuberose flower and its strong scent – “Oh, tuberose, your scent cuts deeper than anyone…I put a hundred of you in a wreath and wear you in my heart“.
In 2019, another iconic hit – ดวงใจ – would drop, this time with a music video centred around the Loy Krathong festival.
A year later, Palmy leaned into her penchant for symbolism, when she released ขวัญเอยขวัญมา. The pensive music video is shot from the point of view of a bride that was jilted at the altar, and contains plenty of Thai marriage symbolism.
Palmy has a demo version of the song that is available on streaming platforms, and that track – with its acoustic piano sound and choral backing – underscores the heartbreak of the lyrics.
In 2022, Palmy teamed up with Singto Numchok to release the upbeat ริบบิ้นเลิฟคัลเลอร์แบล็ค. The music video is an absudist’s dream, with Palmy donning a pink heart headpiece, later changing into a gigantic pink heart bodysuit.
In the same year, she released สนิทใจ, the soundtrack to the one31 drama รักร้าย – one of the rare occasions that Palmy would sing an OST to a series.
Palmy also took part in GMM Music’s 40th anniversary music project, covering folk singer Tai Orathai’s ซังได้ซังแล้ว, and giving the song a contemporary pop-rock feel.
